Climbing pictures

I realised that some people don’t necessarily have access to facebook therefore hereby some pictures from our climbing trip to Sotra nearly two weeks ago. This was a trip with some old friends who visited from Paris. They are keen climbers and we were keen to show them our local sites. Lovely day for a climb and picnic! As another illustration of how we are moving on Saskia very confidently climbed most of the routes she started without giving up and Esther had her first go a leading some routes!

Proud or beaten?

Historic day last week! The good news: In 35 years of running I had never come first. Last weekit happened, 1st in the over 50s! Won a pair of hiking socks for the effort. The bad news (for me): Esther beat me in the very same race.

A weekend of kajakking

Saskia joined the local kajakk club this spring and this weekend she made her debut in a kajakk competition. On Saturday it was 200 m in the K1 followed by 200 m in the K4 on Sunday. She did really well in the K1 managed to wave at us whilst making her way to the finish. The K4 was a superb race, Saskia’s boat is in lane 3 and she is the 3rd person in the boat. They missed 3rd place by only half a second! Well done.

Here’s one for the grandparents and others that might be interested. Saskia has been playing the cello for a while now. She still loves it, practices every day and has a lesson with Ben at the Grieg Hall every week! Apologies for the sound quality, blame it on our simple camera. I promise you it is a joy to attend the lessons!

Esther appeared on the front page of  Vestnytt after a superb run in Glesvær on Sotra last Sunday. It was bitterly cold and there was snow on the ground but it didn’t hold her back.

In translation:  “Fast as lightning in the cold
13 year old Esther Zijerveld impressed in Glesvær run”

and:  “But the one who impressed most of all was a 13 year old girl with running experience from GB. “It was a lot of fun” said Esther Zijerveld. She reached the finish in about 20 minutes, a very strong time for a young girl in a difficult 4.5 km run.
It was the first time she took part in the Glesvær run, and she was by far the quickest in the children and juniorsclass.
It was not difficult she said. Her speed and style towards the finish showed that indeed it wasn’t very difficult for her. She wasn’t bothered by the temperature either. “It wasn’t cold” she said.”

en:  “Maar degene die het meest imponeerde was een 13 jarig meisje met loopervaring in Groot Brittanie. “Het was hartstikke leuk”  zei Esther Zijerveld. Ze bereikte de finish in ongeveer 20 minuten, een hele goede tijd for een jong meisje in en moelijke 4.5 km wedstrijd.
Het was de eerste keer dat ze deelnam in de  Glesvær loop and ze was met afstand de snelste in de jongeren klasse. Het was niet moeilijk zei ze. Haar snelheid en loopstijl naar de streep liet zijn dat het inderdaad niet moeilijk voor haar was. Ze had ook geen last van de temperatuur “het was niet koud zei ze.””

Not been particularly sunny this September, mostly rain. hard rain. I’ve just made some really good raspberry frozen yogurt and it tasted amazing.

Here’s the recipe:

I’m sorry it is all in cup measures.

  • 3 cups fresh or frozen (not thawed) raspberries
  • 2 cups plain yogurt
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Put the raspberries, yogurt, sugar and vanilla extract in the food processor and blend together as much as you like. If you have an ice cream machine put all the mixture in and switch on until desired consistency. Mix in chocolate If you don’t have an ice cream machine you put the mixture on the freezer with the chocolate in and stir every few hours, until the mixture is firm along the edges and semi-firm in the center. Transfer to a food processor and process until smooth. done!

We also made sausage rolls a few weeks ago. We made the puff pastry our selves and it turned out really good.

  • 250g strong plain flour
  • 1 tsp fine sea salt
  • 250g butter , at room temperature, but not soft
  • about 150ml cold water


  1. Sift the flour and salt into a large bowl. Roughly break the butter in small chunks, add them to the bowl and rub them in loosely. You need to see bits of butter.
  2. Make a well in the bowl and pour in about two-thirds of the cold water, mixing until you have a firm rough dough adding extra water if needed. Cover with cling film and leave to rest for 20 mins in the fridge.
  3. Turn out onto a lightly floured board, knead gently and form into a smooth rectangle. Roll the dough in one direction only, until 3 times the width, about 20 x 50cm. Keep edges straight and even. Don’t overwork the butter streaks; you should have a marbled effect.
  4. Fold the top third down to the center, then the bottom third up and over that. Give the dough a quarter turn (to the left or right) and roll out again to three times the length. Fold as before, cover with cling film and chill for at least 20 mins before rolling to use.

Have a good time eating these recipes, they are quite tasty.

We haven’t updated the blog much recently. Things have been getting inthe way a bit lately: roof repairs, norwegian exams, christmas, skiing……

Norge i et nøtteskall

In my previous post I mentioned our trip to Flåm. I have now posted some pictures here, mainly documenting the train journey up to Myrdal and the bike ride back down to Flåm. The latter involves a descent of nearly 1000m in 20km, with a significant part (ca. 400 m happening over 21 switchbacks in the first few km). Great fun for relatively little effort. Also included are some pictures of the amazing scenery that we travelled through around Stalheimen on the way to Flåm.

Weather obsessed

It’s time to talk about the weather. We have had rather a lot of it recently and in a place like Bergen, one of the wettest cities in the world it is hard not to obsess about it. Before we moved people often asked how we were going to cope with all the rain, my answer was that it rains a lot but most of it comes in big downpours, with bright patches in between. This has definitely been true until the beginning of September, in fact july and august were actually very pleasant and since we moved to Laksevåg we have had many dinners out on the deck behind the house enjoying the evening sun!

Although very overgrown, the garden with our new house has already produced a lot of nice fruit for us. Starting with redcurrants and some gooseberries at the beginning of August, and piles and piles of plums over the past two weeks.  So we have been busy making jam, compote and… best of all plum pie!
