The snow is back

After last month’s snow the weather warmed up a lot and most of the snow in the mountains disapeared. Since last weekend the bad weather has returned. We had a some friends visiting this weekend (Oona and Jean-Pierre) and on sunday had to cut short our hike to the geocache on the Mont Aiguille, because the high winds were a bit too much for the girls. The surrounding mountains were all collecting a fresh coating of snow once again. The bad weather continued during monday and tuesday, and when the sun came out today, it seemed obvious to go for some more sledging, it was super. You can admire some new pictures here.

Game on

The final instalment of my cooking course was all to do with game. Again we prepared two dishes:

  • Salmi de pintadeau, au raisin, sauce porto
  • Filet de biche façon grand veneur

That’s guinea fowl and roedeer, I think, only found out using the online translator the day after the course.

The Algerians win again

So the Algerians played another football match last night, the third one during our stay here. The match was won and and the Algerians are through to the world championships next year. Imagine the joy and exhilaration, so there was a lot of noise fireworks etc…….. But somehow things went pear-shaped,  bins and cars were set alight, stones were thrown at the police, there was teargas and few arrests. Another riot right outside our front-door link.

All this coincided with Patience returning from a trip to London, luckily her flight was delayed and she only got home after the worst of the riot was over.

The second instalment of my cooking course came under the heading of  “Tout poisson”. We prepared two main courses, one with a very nice white fish I hadn’t come across before (sandre) and another with scalops:

  • Pavé de sandre rôti à l’unilaterale, poêlée de champignons
  • Petite blanquette de noix de Saint Jacques

How to make a caramel without burning it.

On monday I went for the first instalment of a three week cookery course at the Lycee des Metiers de l’Hotellerie et du Tourisme. This was a birthday present from my Vischclub friend Peter, co-sponsored by Patience and Tessa. This was altogether a very interesting and educational experience.

The course took place in a professional restaurant kitchen, with all the equipment imaginable, using amazing ingredients and led by a professional chef.  This week the theme was “Autour du foie gras” and we prepared two dishes with foie gras as the main ingredient:

  • Escalope de foie gras en nougatine de morilles, pommes céleri
  • Foie gras de canard poêlé et son étuvée de fruits de saison, jus aigre doux au Gaillac, carrottes a la creme

We’re coming home

It was a bit strange not to know when we were going to go home, but now we have booked our return journeys. Patience is flying back to Edinburgh on the 29th of December and Leo is leaving Grenoble by car on the 28th to catch the ferry from Zeebrugge to Rosyth and arrive back in Edinburgh at about the same time as Patience and the girls.

It’s a bit strange to think about going home, now that things are actually going quite well, certainly me and Patience are going to miss being here. The girls do seem quite keen to go back as they are missing their friends.

Snow

We went sledging today and there was lot’s of snow, up to higher than my ankles. The best way to sledge is inside a large plastic bag, it’s very fast but you might hurt your bum on rocks hidden under the snow. We tried to make a snowman but the snow was too dry so we trampled on it…..

Start of the snow-season

The snow has arrived, in the mountains at least. So this morning we set off to the Chamrousse, the closest ski-resort to Grenoble (on a clear day we can see it from our sitting room window) for a bit of fun in the snow. There was about 20 cm of it, nice and dry, and the temperature only just below zero. The only thing that was missing was the sun, I guess you can’t have it all.

A trip to the south

The girls have just had 10 days off school and we’ve made use of  this break by enjoying a little holiday. For the first two days we were in the Ardeche, followed by a few days at the northern edge of the Provence. It only takes 2.5 hrs to get to these places so it seemed a waste not to do this at least once during our stay in grenoble. (more…)
